Re: The Allardyce dilemma...
Allardyce strikes me as a manager very set in the way he likes his football and how he likes players to perform.

So now the owners have to make (at least a few) signings over his head (apparently Allardyce wasn't keen on Sakho) and they needed to tell him that more attractive, attacking, passing on the deck football was required - and he is on massive wages.

A manager on massive wages shouldn't need to be told how to play, which players to play, how to set up and so forth. That's the kind of stuff you pay him for.

Are we really supposed to believe we played all this crap football last season because of injury problems (all teams have them) or because nobody told Allardyce it might be a good idea to be a bit more positive when setting up the team ?

Our current squad is one many managers would kill for to manage it. The opportunities and formations we can play now are endless.
Is Allardyce really the kind of manager you'd expect to get the most out of this massive potential we now have ? I doubt it.

Let him run down his contract and start sorting out a decent, hopefully slightly younger, replacement now.

This is a very good point. Meet all targets, get dumped. Who fancies it?

Re: The Allardyce dilemma...
I'd sign all the staff up now but only with bonuses no wage. I'd install a separate team in direct competition to run the youth and development squad. This second team can be brought into the first team if the first team fail to meet targets relegating the first team staff to the youth and development squad. The same rules would apply. The whole deal would be on a two year rolling contract.
Both teams would have extremely clear directives as to what their goals are.

This essentially happens to players so why not management?

He shouldn't still be in the job. But he is, so I don't see the point of changing it now. Hopefully a steady season will mean the club won't have to do too much in the January window, all set up for a smooth changeover to a better manager next Summer.

i am (and have been) firmly in the 'sam out' camp.
however, you cannot argue with what has been on show thus far this season. If (and it's a big if) we carry on in this way we would finish on roughly 50 points. That would be a good result. Given that result you cannot argue with him getting a contract extension.

Lots of 'IF's' to be answered though.

Re: The Allardyce dilemma...
Took me quite a while to move into the Allardyce out camp because I never fully bought the "he can only play one way" idea despite being yelled down by the site gurus. I had seen his teams play in different ways.

But he did some things in the second half of last season that made me think that it would be better if he moved on. Losing a lot of fans, not just a vocal WHO minority was one of them.

Similarly, not ready to jump back to the "he should be our manager for ever after" side now. I am not surprised that he could play a different way but after a few, albeit enjoyable, games in I still think there is unhelpful drama lurking beneath the surface. It is early days still.

That all being said, if we have a successful season, meaning that we have continually built on our league position (therefore making last year a blip) I can't justify letting him go. I take a bit of pride in having one of the longest serving managers and think it sends a bad message to future managers if you dump someone who has done what they were supposed to do.

Re: The Allardyce dilemma...
I suppose it should be down to the squad.

We all agree that the squad is haping up nicely. If they rerspect the gaffer, and want him to stay, that should be the end of discussion. The way it seems to me, they are busting their nuts for the manager, so I'm not sure it would be a good effect on the squad if we dumped the man who they seem to respect.

Re: The Allardyce dilemma...
He has to be moved on, retired from football ideally. I can't believe he can be given much credit for our change in style, recent wins and we know all about who signed the players that have made the difference. He has done too much harm than good.
With the squad we have now most other managers shouldn't struggle. We can't keep relying on the davids buying the players and telling the nanager how he needs to play the game. Contract expires.. lets all move on there and then.
